Behind The Design:
Rwanda has a long history of craft. Traditionally passed down through generations of women, weaving has long been a form of artistic expression with very practical application.
Raffia is a straw-like material found inside of a species of palm that grows abundantly across sub-Saharan Africa. The fiber is stripped from the palm leaf, dried in the sun, dyed (if desired), and woven. Because Raffia is soft, durable, and flexible it can be used in a variety of techniques from coil weaving to crochet.
Jacaranda trees found in southern Rwanda provide a durable wood with a distinctive grain pattern. The wood's malleability makes it a perfect addition to woven patterns, creating a unique textural look.
Impact
The artisan sector is the second largest employer in the developing world. Yet the majority of artisans are women who lack access to export markets, business skills, and the financial tools needed to run successful, global enterprises.
We are dedicated to changing that by investing 100% of our profits into education programs for the women who handcraft our products and youth in their communities. Since 2007, we've provided over 1,100 artisans and 250 young people in Rwanda & Ghana with employment opportunities, entrepreneurship training, and consistent access to the global export market.
Care Instructions
Our woven pieces are sturdy and made to last. They’re also meant to be used, and because life happens, sometimes they get a little out of shape.
You can reshape your basket or bag by spraying creased areas with water and pressing into your desired shape. The material should feel damp but not saturated. Add water slowly to get a feel for what your piece needs and avoid color bleeding. Let dry, avoiding direct sunlight, or placing on fabrics. Repeat as necessary.
Avoid saturating wood handles and make sure to dry fully before storing. Apply a light coating of food quality mineral oil every few months or whenever the wood looks dry.
Stray fibers are normal, trim any that appear over time
